Red Hat Society crowns princess
Ann Marie Dela Pena was crowned Princess Ruby Red at the 11th annual Hawaii State Red Hat Society Convention held recently at King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel.
The competition included evaluations of attire, talent and evidence of “Red Hattitude” and was attended by 100 members.
Dela Pena is the vice queen of the Famalaoan I Flores, a chapter from Oahu. For her fashion stroll, she wore a custom mermaid gown covered with hand-sewn rhinestones. For the talent portion, she danced a Chamorro batsu or waltz. The judges for this event were Kona commuity members Laura Guluzzy, Claire Inman and Huellyn Whitford. The convention was chaired by Mililani Hughes, queen of the Ula La Chapter.
The next state convention will be held Oct. 16 and 17, 2015, at the Pacific Beach Hotel in Honolulu.
State offers Medicare enrollment information
To assist Medicare recipients during Medicare’s annual enrollment period, the Hawaii State Health Insurance Assistance Program will offer free Medicare programs and Part D Prescription Drug Plan information and counseling from 9 a.m. to noon Monday at the Waimea Senior Center, 67-1199 Mamalahoa Highway, Nov. 12 at West Hawaii Community Health Center at 75-5751 Kuakini Highway, Suite 104 and Nov. 13 at West Hawaii Civic Center, Building D.
Trained counselors will be available to help with questions or issues concerning Medicare health coverage.

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park announces program schedule
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park shares Hawaiian culture and After Dark in the Park programs with the community in November. All programs are free, but park entrance fees may apply.
From 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Kilauea Visitor Center Auditorium Historian Boyd D. Bond will unravel the events that led to Hawaii’s statehood. A $2 donation helps support After Dark programs.
Entrance to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Puuhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park and all fee-charging national parks is free Tuesday, Nov. 11 in observance of Veteran’s Day.
Witness the art of kapa making with Kuuleimomi Makuakane-Salavea from 10 a.m. to noon Nov. 12 on the Kilauea Visitor Center lanai as she demonstrates how kapa is made into cloth from the inner bark of the paper mulberry tree.
On Kahuku Ohana Day, Hokulea apprentice navigator Celeste Manuia Hao will recount the story of navigation techniques used on her return to Samoa from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 22 at the Kahuku Unit in Ka‘u at mile marker 70.5. Ulana lauhala weaving, using the leaves of the pandanus tree, will be demonstrated by the members of Aha Puhala o Puna from 10 a.m. to noon Nov. 26 on the Kilauea Visitor Center lanai.

The Kona-Kohala Chamber of Commerce will offer its monthly Business First Pau Hana from 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday at Red Water Cafe in Waimea. The informal networking event affords attendees the chance to connect with other businesses while learning about the local business community.

Documentary addresses obesity and diabetes
A free showing of the documentary movie “Fed Up,” will be hosted by the Hawaii Public Health Institute at 6 p.m. Wednesday at West Hawaii Civic Center, Council Chambers. This documentary provides vital information about the obesity and diabetes epidemics asserting a 30-year campaign by the food industry and the U.S. government to mislead and confuse Americans.

Lecture focuses on property law
Gregory Alexander, well-known property law scholar, author and professor at Cornell Law School, will present the 2014 Distinguished Gifford Lecture in Real Property titled, “Five Easy Pieces: Recurrent Themes in American Property Law” from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the UH Manoa School of Law, in the Moot Courtroom. Admission is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served following the lecture.
Crystal bowl concert scheduled
At 7 p.m. Wednesday Naoe Amano will play the crystal bowl at Hawaiian Queen Coffee Garden, 75-1048 Henry St.
Having performed in Japan, Hawaii and San Francisco, Amano is known for her unique performance style which includes playing the crystal bowl and piano simultaneously.
